Exceptional imaging power and super-high-sensitivity ISO 819200 photography to deliver prime-quality images

HD PENTAX-DA 21mmF3.2AL Limited Aperture: F4.0 ; Shutter speed: 1/50 sec. ; Exposure compensation: -0.3EV ; ISO sensitivity: 1600 ; White balance: CTE ; Custom image: Vibrant

ISO 819200 High-resolution images captured at the highest sensitivity in PENTAX APS-C-format digital SLR history

The PENTAX KP couples a new-generation CMOS image sensor with the PRIME IV imaging engine and an accelerator unit to greatly expand the upper limit of its sensitivity range without generating annoying noise. With a top sensitivity of ISO 819200 (standard output sensitivity), it assures super-high-sensitivity photography to deliver high-resolution, rich-gradation images with remarkable reproduction of the subject’s texture and a true-to-life sense of depth, even at higher sensitivities. It also produces high-quality images across its entire sensitivity range — from the lowest to the highest.

Approximately 24.32 effective megapixels and optical AA-filter-free design High-quality imaging supported by a new APS-C-size CMOS image sensor

The PENTAX KP incorporates a new-generation, APS-C-size CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.32 effective megapixels to produce high-resolution images. It also features an optical design free of the optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter to optimize the image sensor’s outstanding imaging power. The result is sharp, fine-detailed images with a truthful sense of depth. By processing image data at a high readout speed of 14bit, it produces beautiful, rich-gradation images.

Pixel Shift Resolution System
State-of-the-art technology to optimize the high-pixel sensor’s imaging power for true-to-life color reproduction

Driven by the camera’s in-body SR (Shake-Reduction) mechanism, this innovative system* captures four images of the same scene by shifting the image sensor by a single pixel for each image, then synthesizing them into a single composite image. Because it obtains all the color data in each pixel to compose the image, it delivers super-high-resolution images which are far more truthful than those captured by normal shooting processes. It assures true-to-life color reproduction without false colors, while effectively reducing annoying noise. When the Motion Correction function** is activated, it automatically detects the amount of the subject’s movement during exposure, and minimizes negative effects during the synthesizing process.

* When using this system, the user is advised to stabilize the camera firmly on a tripod, and use either the self-timer setting of the drive mode or a mirror lock-up function.
* This system may not produce the desired effect when the subject is in motion, or the camera is shaken during exposure.
** The Motion Correction function may not correct certain types of subject movement. It does not guarantee that the movement will be properly corrected for all subjects. The user may turn this function off when needed.

SR II in-body, five-axis shake reduction mechanism Effective camera shake compensation of up to five shutter steps

The PENTAX KP comes equipped with the innovative sensor-shift-type SR II (Shake Reduction II), which assures optimum compensation effect for all lenses. In addition to common camera shake caused by pitch and yaw, this five-axis mechanism also compensates for camera shake caused by horizontal and vertical shift (often generated in macro photography) and camera shake caused by roll, which is difficult to handle by lens-installed shake reduction mechanisms. Thanks to a wide compensation range of five shutter steps,* it benefits a number of handheld applications, such as when using a telephoto lens or shooting in poorly-lit locations, to capture sharp, blur-free images.

* Measured in conformity to CIPA standards, using the smc PENTAX-DA 18-135mmF3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF]DC WR lens at a focal length of 135mm.

[ Compatible with panning shots ]

When taking a panning shot, the PENTAX KP detects the direction of the panning action, then controls the SR II mechanism to compensate for all other affecting vectors. It captures beautiful, high-resolution images both in normal shooting and panning photography, without requiring any switching operation.

27-point AF system
(with 25 cross-type sensors)Extra-accurate detection of the subject

Featuring 27 sensor points across the image field, the PENTAX KP’s sophisticated AF system not only captures the subject in sharp focus, but also automatically refocuses on a moving subject when it moves away from the initial point, with the help of neighboring points. Of the 27 points, 25 cross-type sensors are positioned in the middle to assure high-precision autofocus operation for all types of subjects.

Cross-shaped sensor Liner sensor  F2.8 Luminous flux Liner sensor

F2.8 luminance flux linear AF sensors

Three center sensors — one in the middle and two others positioned above and below it — are designed to detect the luminance flux of an F2.8 lens for high-precision autofocusing. When using a very fast lens with a maximum aperture of larger than F2.8, these sensors assure focusing accuracy better than that of other sensors (designed for a F5.6 luminance flux).

Scene Analyze AUTOAdvanced scene analysis mode developed from deep learning technology

Supported by the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System, this mode automatically optimizes exposure settings, then selects the most appropriate finishing touch for each subject. When using the optical viewfinder, the system is assisted by an algorithm developed through the use of deep learning artificial intelligence technology to perform more complete scene assessment. Simply by setting the camera’s mode dial to AUTO (Scene Analyze AUTO), you are assured of the best finishing touch for each image.

Multi-mode AE systemA combination of the PENTAX-invented Hyper exposure system and distinctive exposure modes

In addition to the conventional Av (Aperture-priority) and Tv (Shutter-priority) modes, the PENTAX KP provides PENTAX-original auto-exposure modes that let you express the subject’s motion and the depth of field in the way you want. By setting the Smart Function to the ISO mode, you can flexibly control three primary exposure parameters — aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity – using the front and rear e-dials and the setting dial.

P (Hyper Program mode)

This mode lets you set the desired aperture and/or shutter speed using the e-dials, while retaining the proper exposure level. This eliminates the need for switching the mode dial to the Tv or Av position to achieve the desired visual effect, such as the rendering of subject motion or the depth of field.

M (Hyper Manual mode)

After setting the proper exposure level with a push of the green button, you can adjust the exposure to the desired level using the e-dials. This is a much faster and easier way to obtain the desired exposure than manually setting each exposure parameter while checking the exposure bar scale. By activating the AE-lock function, you can even shift aperture and/or shutter-speed settings while retaining the initial exposure level.

* Using AE-lock function together, you can even shift aperture and/or shutter-speed settings while retaining the exposure level of that time.

Sv (Sensitivity-priority mode)

The camera automatically selects a combination of aperture and shutter speed settings to obtain the proper exposure level, in relation to the user-selected ISO sensitivity.

TAv (Shutter-speed/Aperture-priority mode)

The camera automatically selects the ISO sensitivity to obtain the proper exposure level, in relation to the user-selected aperture and shutter speed settings.

B (Bulb mode)

This mode allows you to set any desired exposure duration. It also provides a Bulb Timer function to set the desired exposure time from 10 seconds to 20 minutes. This adds versatility and flexibility to bulb shooting.

Depth-of-field Bracketing and Motion Bracketing Quick capture of three images with varied depth of field or subject motion

These new functions allow you to capture three different images of the same scene or subject with a single shutter release, without affecting the overall exposure level. Since they don’t require time-consuming manual operation to shift exposure settings, you can concentrate on a shutter chance and image composition.

[ Depth-of-field Bracketing ]

This function continuously captures three images with different depths of field by automatically raising or lowering the aperture setting in steps.

Electronically controlled shutter unit with quiet, high-speed operation and top speed of 1/24000-second

Ideal for shooting in quiet locations, and for creating beautiful bokeh effects in sunlight scenes

The PENTAX KP provides a choice of mechanical and electronic shutter modes. In the electronic shutter mode,* the shutter unit produces very little noise and vibration during shutter-curtain operation, making it ideal for shooting in locations where silence is required. This mode also provides a top shutter speed of 1/24000 second, making it handy when you want to use an open aperture in bright, sunny locations. In Live View or mirror lock-up shooting, it provides even quieter, lower-vibration operation.

* The electronic shutter mode can be used with continuous shooting, bracketing, mirror lock-up, and multiple exposure functions. When the PENTAX Pixel Shift Resolution System is engaged, the camera’s shutter mode is locked to electronic shutter.
* In the electronic shutter mode, the SR II mechanism and the AA-filter simulator are inoperable.
* When shooting a fast-moving subject in the electronic shutter mode, the subject may appear to be distorted.
